Why library instruction?

Library instruction is designed to meet the needs of each instructor’s course.  Librarians can introduce students to library resources, information technology, research strategies, and information literacy skills.

To arrange for library instruction, please use the Instruction Request Form or email library staff at asklibrary@tstc.edu.

 

Library instruction methods

Traditional One-Shot Session
A live, single-session class covering targeted research or library skills

Flipped Classroom
Students complete prep work (videos, guides, etc) before a live or follow-up session.

Embedded Librarian
Librarian collaborates within the course (e.g. in Canvas) to support student research throughout the term.

Asynchronous Modules
Pre-recorded lessons or interactive tutorials students can complete at their own pace.

Custom Video or Tutorial
Short, tailored videos or step-by-step guides for a specific assignment or topic.

Instruction topics

Information Literacy
Help students find, use, and understand information effectively and ethically.

Digital Literacy
Support student skills in using digital tools, platforms, and online resources.

Using the Library Website
Show students how to navigate the library site to find research materials and help.

Introductory or Advanced Research Skills
Develop student skills for starting or deepening their research.

Subject & Assignment Specific Research
Offer targeted research guidance tailored to course topics and assignments.

Evaluation of Information Resources
Teach students to identify credible sources and avoid misinformation.

Plagiarism & Citation
Reinforce proper citation practices and understanding of academic integrity.
