Using the FAA’s Dynamic Regulatory System (DRS)

A guide to aid navigating the DRS efficiently.

Quick start

The FAA's regulatory Dynamic Regulatory System (DRS) is a comprehensive platform for accessing regulatory information, including regulations, orders, notices, and guidance materials.  This guide will help you navigate the system efficiently.

To get started:

  1. Access the DRS: Visit drs.faa.gov.
  2. Create an Account (optional): While an account is not required, creating one allows for saved searches and preferences.
  3. Use the Search Bar:Enter keywords, document numbers, or regulatory references to find relevant materials.
  4. Browse by Category:Explore regulations, airworthiness directives, exemptions, and other documents through category.
The Browse Category Tree and Basic Search areas.
  5. Refine Results: Use filters to narrow down your search results based on document type, date, and relevance.

Browsing

Type “TCDS” in the Browse field and then selecting the document type “Type Certificate Data Sheets” yields approximately 2,000 results. (The results could change after each nightly update.)

Note: DRS is not case-sensitive, so typing in “tcds” will yield the same results as typing in “TCDS.”

Searching

Typing “tcds” in the Search window yields more than 7,000 results. This is because DRS searches for every instance of “tcds” in all documents, rather than limiting the results to the TCDS document type.

Document version & status

DRS generally defaults to show the most current version of a document first, regardless of whether Browse or Search is used.

A document’s status will fall into one of three categories:

  • Current: the document is active and currently being used. The status is denoted not only by the word “Current” in the Status field, but also typically by a green calendar icon.
  • Pending: the document is published and is awaiting a release and/or issuance date. Once a pending document is released, the Status field changes to “Current.”
  • Historical: the document is superseded or canceled.
