Research assignments can be difficult to begin, especially if you are not sure how to get started.  This guide is intended to help you with basic English grammar, punctuation, and mechanics.

Questions to Ask While Editing

  • Does your paper have a thesis?
  • If someone read your introduction, would they be able to tell you what your paper was about?
  • Who is your paper’s audience?
  • Is your paper’s topic appropriate for the assignment?
  • Is the paper written in a logical way?
  • Does your paper follow your outline?
  • Do your paragraphs have good transitions to lead the reader through your ideas?
  • Do any paragraphs seem shorter or longer than others? 

Editing Tips

  • Read your paper out loud
  • Proofread your paper backwards, going sentence by sentence to catch mistakes.
